I love living in Rochester. A wonderful town to work and raise a family. However, when it comes to getting big projects off the ground over the years, there are always issues especially when it comes to our sports venues.
The Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial needs tremendous upgrades. It is not a 21st century arena. In 1998 $41 million were used to renovate the building that was built in 1955. Other than the glass atrium, it was money not well spent. The place is pretty much a dump. I live by the phrase do it right or don't do it at all. Rather than renovate, an entirely new arena was needed. Now the city is back where it was 15 years ago.
Where to put Sahlen Stadium served as great debate. I was a fan of putting it right next to Frontier Field. For a variety of issues is was contructed a few blocks away. There was also debate to build in Gates off of Elmwood. Sahlen Stadium has been a financial disaster. Only last year showers were installed. If you build it they will come certainly does not apply to the home of the Rhinos, Western New York Flash and the Rattlers.
Just as Frontier Field, Sahlen Stadium has not spawned economic growth in either area. We are a wonderful city but at crucials times has dropped the ball when it comes leadership and leaders.
