Last week Sabres owner Terry Pegula fired his coach Lindy Ruff, now its time to say goodbye to his G-M Darcy Regier. Mr. Pegula has to know its time to blow his team up and start over.
Just last month Regier received a contract extension. Regier, in his 16th season as Sabres general manager, has overseen a franchise that has reached the Eastern Conference finals four times, most recently in 2007. However, the team has only four playoff appearances in 12 years since Dominik Hasek bolted Buffalo. Ruff was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL, but clearly wasn’t the right coach moving forward and Regier is not the right GM anymore either. Bad draft choices in recent years, plus overpaying for free agents like Ville Leino and Christian Ehrhoff has back fired.
In the end, the Sabres have missed the playoffs three times in the past five seasons and have not won a playoff series since 2007. Mr. Pegula is a smart man,so he knows exactly what he has to do at seasons end.
And finally, I think the decision of not re-signing receiver David Nelson is a mistake. He has great hands, a good blocker and a perfect slot guy.
