Third ranked Syracuse fell 75-71 in overtime to Villanova on Saturday, but the discussion since the loss has centered around Jim Boeheim's decision not to foul at the end of regulation with the Orange leading by three points.
Beoheim says he was afraid that if SU fouled, Villanova would miss the second free throw, then would get the rebound against his small lineup. Becaause of the failure to foul, the Wildcats attempted to three point shots in the closing seconds to force overtime. Why haven't coaches learned just to foul at the end rather than let a team get two attempts at tying the game. Poor decision by Beoheim.
SU's failure at the free throw line also played a hand in the loss. The Orange converted only 24-35 at the charity stripe. Michael-Carter Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one prior to Villanova tying the game. SU was also out rebounded 47-34.
After starting the season 2-0, the Sabres have dropped three in a row. Playing without their top scorer, Thomas Vanek, who was out with a muscle strain, the Sabres offense was stagnant.
Buffalo was outshot 30-24. Buffalo is really onlly playing with a one effective scoring line.
The Sabres host Toronto on Tuesday night.
