Manti Te'o was allegedly talking to a man for more than 1,000 hours who was faking the voice of his fake girlfriend Leenay Kuekua. Hoax mastermind Roniaiah Tuiasopo was the voice on the other end of the phone. Tuiasosopo is seeing a mental health professional and wants to tell his side of the story, the lawyer said.
In an interview with ABC News' Katie Couric the Notre Dame linebacker lied to the media after learning that the death of supposed girlfriend Lennay Kekua was a hoax.
Te'o said he believed Kekua had died of leukemia on September 12 after a car accident left her hospitalized. But he received a call December 6 from the woman he thought was Kekua, and she said she was alive.
One of lessons learned here is that in today digital and technological world it’s almost impossible to get away with lying. There is always a trace.
Although Te'o insisted his emotions surrounding Kekua's loss were authentic. Te'o is a product of his generation that has grown up with social media, which explains how a person can fall in love with someone they never met in person.
