Last night the Carrier Dome third-ranked Syracuse held on for a 72-68 victory over the University of Detroit in front of 17,902 fans at the Carrier Dome. James Southerland had 22 points for Syracuse (10-0), which increased its home winning streak to 30 games, longest in the nation.
The night belonged to 68-year old Jim Boeheim, who recorded his 900th victory joining Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) are the only other men's Division I coaches to win that many games. Boeheim has the most wins of any division one men's basketball coach at the same school.
Boeheim enrolled at Syracuse as a walk-on point guard in 1962 and he never left. He replaced Roy Danforth in 1976. His first win with the Orange came against Harvard in 1976, a 75-48 victory. Since then Boeheim holds the Division I record for 20-win seasons with 34. He has guided the Orange to three final fours and a national championship in 2003. I feel Boeheim needs to win another national title to be considered as one of the game's all time great.
Syracuse plays again Saturday against Temple in Madison Square Garden Saturday at noon.
